Together with the brilliant minds in the neurology and electrophysiology departments, we are conducting a groundbreaking study on subvocal recognition.

Problem What is Subvocal Recognition?

Imagine a world where you can communicate without speaking aloud, where your thoughts are translated into words without uttering a sound. This is the realm of subvocal recognition—a technology that detects the silent, unspoken words formed by the movements of our vocal cords. It’s like having a direct line from your brain to a communication device.

  • To achieve this, we are leveraging a transfer learning approach. Transfer learning, for the uninitiated, involves taking a pre-trained model and fine-tuning it for a specific task. In our case, we are starting with advanced speech recognition algorithms and enhancing them with electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) data.
  • EEG Data: Captures the electrical activity of the brain. By analyzing brainwave patterns, we can understand the neural impulses that correspond to different subvocalized words.
  • EMG Data: Records the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles. This data helps us decode the subtle muscle movements involved in silent speech.
